About

Thayer Lake Shelter North is a historic backcountry shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. This 12' x 10' 3-sided Adirondack-style structure with a dirt floor sits at the north end of Thayer Lake on central Admiralty Island, deep within the Kootznoowoo Wilderness and Admiralty Island National Monument. The shelter is part of the Admiralty Island Canoe Route system and offers basic protection from the elements in one of Alaska's most remote wilderness areas. Access is by floatplane only, approximately 40 minutes from Juneau. Thayer Lake typically remains ice-free from early May through mid-November, making it ideal for fishing along its shallow edges. The shelter is linked by trails to other lakes and shelters in the area, including the Distin to Thayer Trail. Non-potable water is available from the lake and must be treated or filtered. The area receives light use due to its remote location and offers exceptional opportunities for viewing brown bears, other wildlife, and experiencing true wilderness solitude in Alaska's rainforest ecosystem.

Directions
