About

Distin Lake Cabin is a historic enclosed CCC Adirondack shelter constructed in 1936, situated in the remote Kootznoowoo Wilderness on Admiralty Island within the Tongass National Forest. The structure features a Pan Abode cabin-style layout with four single wooden bunks, a wood stove, table and benches, cooking counter, and an outhouse. Sleeping capacity is limited to 2 adults and 2 children. The cabin sits 30 feet back from Distin Lake with minimal beach area. Distin Lake is part of the Cross Admiralty Canoe Route, with two short portage trails on the lake. A 3-mile trail to Thayer Lake begins at the cabin, featuring some original CCC trail construction. Access is by floatplane (approximately 45 minutes from Juneau) or by canoe with an 8-mile portage from Mitchell Bay. Helicopter access is prohibited in this designated Wilderness area. This is brown bear country. The lake remains ice-covered for five months annually, and water temperatures never warm significantly. Lake water is available but requires treatment before consumption. This structure is currently in disrepair and not available for rent.

Directions

Distin Lake is in the central portion of Admiralty Island. Access by floatplane or canoe and portage. One-way flight time from Juneau is approximately 45 minutes. By canoe and portage, it is 8 miles to Mitchell Bay. This cabin is in a designated Wilderness area and access by helicopter is illegal.
