About

Kankakee River State Park Campground sits within a 4,000-acre park stretching 11 miles along both sides of the Kankakee River in northeastern Illinois. The park offers two main camping areas: Potawatomi Campground with 110 Class A sites featuring electricity and shower access, and Chippewa Campground with 98 sites split between Class BE (electricity, no showers) and Class C (primitive, no electricity or showers). An equestrian campground is also available seasonally from April 1 through October 31. The Kankakee River is known for quality smallmouth bass, channel catfish, walleye, and northern pike fishing. The park features Rock Creek canyon with exposed rock formations, along with trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. Canoeing and kayaking are popular activities on the river. All campsites include a picnic table and camp grill. Reservations are made through ExploreMoreIL. The park enforces a firewood restriction due to Emerald Ash Borer; no firewood may be brought into or taken out of the park. Alcohol is prohibited throughout the campground, and quiet hours are observed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
