About

Kamloops Island Campground occupies a scenic location at the mouth of the Kettle River where it meets the Columbia River in Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. This small campground features 17 reservation-only sites divided between two areas: a main hub with drive-in sites suitable for both tents and RVs, and a cluster of walk-in tent sites spread throughout a grove of pines on a steep hillside. Many campsites provide views of the rivers, lake, and surrounding landscape. The campground is nestled within thick forests of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, offering ample shade during hot summer months. The location is surrounded by water on two sides, with the Columbia River on one side and the Kettle River on the other. During seasonal draw down periods when water levels are low, the geological formations in the ravine cut by the Kettle River become visible. A courtesy dock provides water access, though no boat launch is available at this campground. The area is abundant with wildlife including moose, elk, deer, and bald eagles. Lake Roosevelt offers excellent fishing opportunities for walleye, bass, rainbow trout, salmon, and sturgeon during limited seasons. The historic St. Paul's Mission, operated by the National Park Service, is located approximately 4.5 miles south in the town of Kettle Falls. Fort Colville and the Hudson Bay Company Post on the Upper Columbia are also nearby, along with the scenic Sherman Drive loop.

Directions

From Kettle Falls, drive north on US 395. Cross Lake Roosevelt on Barneys Bridge and continue on Highway 395 for approximately 3 miles. Turn right onto Northport Flat Creek Road/River Bridge Road and cross the bridge over Kettle River. Turn left at the second Kamloops Island Campground sign.
