About
Juniper Flats Group Campsite is located on Grand Island, a 13,500-acre National Recreation Area in Lake Superior known for its massive 300-foot wave-cut sandstone cliffs, pristine beaches, and rich history dating back to 2,000 BC. The single group campsite accommodates up to 25 guests and is situated on the southern shores of the island. The site is hike-in, bike-in, or boat-in only, as no public vehicles are permitted on Grand Island. The campsite is equipped with tables, campfire rings with grills, vault toilets, and drinking water. Bear poles and boxes are provided for food storage, as black bears inhabit the island. Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash, as there are no stores or trash collection on the island. Access to Grand Island is via passenger ferry from Grand Island Landing on the mainland (about 3-4 miles west of Munising) or by private watercraft. The island offers excellent opportunities for exploring beaches, hiking trails, and viewing historic sites. Mosquitoes and black flies can be severe from mid-May to mid-July, so appropriate repellent is essential.
