About
Channel Marker Campsite sits on the southwest tip of Grand Island, a 13,500-acre National Recreation Area rising from Lake Superior half a mile offshore from Munising, Michigan. This primitive single-site is one of 21 designated backcountry campsites scattered across the island's dense hardwood forests, pristine beaches, and dramatic 300-foot sandstone cliffs. Access is by passenger ferry from Munising (seasonal) or private watercraft; no vehicles are permitted on the island. The site is a short 0.5-mile walk from Williams Landing, where the ferry docks and potable water is available. Kayakers can land on the unnamed beach west of Williams Landing and walk about 100 feet inland to reach the campsite. Amenities are minimal but functional: a 10x10 tent pad, fire ring with grill, latrine, benches, and bear pole with food locker for required food storage. Firewood is provided. Campers must pack out all trash. Grand Island offers excellent hiking and biking on non-motorized trails, with highlights including wave-cut sandstone cliffs, inland lakes, and historic sites like the East Channel Lighthouse. Black bears are present; proper food storage is mandatory. Mosquitoes and black flies can be intense from mid-May through mid-July.
Directions
Grand Island is located in Lake Superior about 0.5 miles from Munising, Michigan. Take the passenger ferry from Grand Island Landing on M-28, approximately 2.5 miles west of downtown Munising.
