Open for reservations through Recreation.gov. Ferry service operates spring through fall. Beginning in fall and throughout winter, ferry service closes and access is only by personal watercraft or, if the lake is frozen, on foot or by snowmobile. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Air Quality Alert for Wednesday July 15, 2026 for elevated levels of fine particulate due to wildfire smoke. Pollutants are expected to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups with the potential for Unhealthy, especially north. This is a Statewide Air Quality Alert. Plumes of smoke from Canadian wildfires are expected to move into the region this week. The plumes will reach the Upper Peninsula this evening, sinking into the northern Lower Peninsula overnight. Models are showing the smoke plumes will reach the Michigan/Indiana border Wednesday evening. It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory conditions like asthma. Watch for symptoms including wheezing,coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in the nose, throat, and eyes. You can help reduce air pollution by limiting activities, such as outdoor burning or use of residential wood burning devices. Tips for households: Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors and, if possible, run central air conditioning with MERV-13 or higher rated filters. About
Grand Island Cabins provide a unique opportunity to stay overnight on Grand Island, a congressionally designated National Recreation Area surrounded by Lake Superior. The island features massive 300-foot sandstone cliffs, old-growth forests, pristine beaches, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing. Two rustic cabins are available: Merchant Cabin near the ferry landing and Sunset Cabin located 3.6 miles inland on the West Rim Trail. Each 14x16-foot cabin includes an attached screened porch, four full-size bunk beds sleeping up to eight people, an outdoor picnic table, and a campfire ring with cooking grate. Firewood is supplied. A covered pit toilet serves each cabin. These are primitive accommodations with no electricity, running water, or trash service. Guests must bring drinking water, food, dishes, utensils, toilet paper, bedding, pillows, garbage bags, and lanterns. Transportation to and from the island is the guest's responsibility via Grand Island Ferry Service or personal watercraft. Generators are prohibited.

Take the Grand Island Ferry from Munising, Michigan to the island. Merchant Cabin is near Williams Landing ferry dock. Sunset Cabin is located on the West Rim Trail approximately 3.6 miles from the ferry landing, accessible by hiking or biking.
