About
James Baird State Park occupies 590 acres of former farmland once owned by James Baird, a contractor and engineer whose firm constructed the Lincoln Memorial. In 1939, Baird donated the land to New York State with the stipulation that it bear his name. The park's centerpiece is a nationally renowned 18-hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, which opened in 1948 after intermittent construction during World War II. The challenging par 5, 13th hole is considered one of the most difficult in the Hudson Valley. The park offers extensive day-use recreation including seven miles of scenic wooded trails ideal for hiking in warm months and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy basketball, softball, tennis and volleyball at the sports complex. Two large picnic pavilions can accommodate up to 300 people each by reservation, and there are spacious open and wooded picnic areas throughout the park. The park operates as a carry-in carry-out facility. No overnight camping is available. The golf course includes a driving range, pro shop, clubhouse, and snack bar.
