About
Jack Creek Campground is a remote, primitive campground in the Greybull Ranger District of Shoshone National Forest, hosting five campsites in a small valley between Piney Pass and Phelps Mountain. The campground serves primarily as a trailhead and staging area for backcountry recreation, particularly for horseback riders and pack trips. The facility includes parking, hitching rails, corrals, and feeders for stock users, though livestock are not allowed in the campground itself and must be kept in designated areas. This is a pack-in, pack-out facility with no garbage collection, no potable water, and vault toilets. Stock can be watered in Jack Creek or the nearby Greybull River. The maximum spur length is 32 feet, and there is a 16-day stay limit. The campground is not accessible to persons with mobility impairments and has no cell service. All campers must practice bear-safe food storage as this is grizzly bear country. Access is via State Highway 290 west from Meeteetse, where the pavement ends after about 11 miles. The campground is located approximately 46 miles from Cody via Meeteetse. The remote location and trailhead access make this an ideal base camp for backcountry exploration, fishing, wildlife viewing, and horseback riding in the Absaroka Mountains.
Directions
From Cody, take State Highway 120 south to Meeteetse (32 miles). Then take State Highway 290 west. Continue on this road (the pavement ends after about 11 miles) for approximately 14 miles to the campground and trailhead.
