About

Shreve Campground is part of Buffalo Bill State Park, situated along Buffalo Bill Reservoir approximately six miles west of Cody, Wyoming. The reservoir was created by the historic Buffalo Bill Dam on the Shoshone River, which was completed in 1910 and stood as the world's highest dam at 325 feet. The park is named for Colonel William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, the legendary Wild West showman who was instrumental in bringing irrigation and development to the region and founded the town of Cody in 1896. The campground provides access to extensive water recreation opportunities across 9,000 acres of reservoir surface, with fishing for trout and lake trout being particularly popular. The scenery is dominated by the Rocky Mountain Absaroka Range, with elevations varying from approximately 5,400 feet at the park to over 12,000 feet in the surrounding mountains. Rattlesnake Mountain frames the north side of Shoshone Canyon, while Cedar Mountain rises to the south. Buffalo Bill State Park features boat ramps, day-use areas, and picnic shelters throughout the property. The park underwent major redevelopment in the 1990s after the dam was raised 25 feet, increasing reservoir capacity. Today it serves as a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts, anglers, and visitors exploring the Cody area and traveling to Yellowstone National Park.
