About
Double Cabin Campground occupies a remote location at the boundary of the Washakie Wilderness in Shoshone National Forest, accessible via a 28-mile drive north of Dubois on Forest Road 285. The campground's 14 sites are positioned to provide direct access to wilderness exploration, with two trails leading north deep into the Washakie Wilderness and one trail following the wilderness boundary south. The Frontier Creek Trail offers a unique opportunity to visit a petrified forest, though removal of petrified wood is strictly prohibited. Each campsite is equipped with RV parking and tent pads, bear-resistant food storage boxes, fire rings with grills, and picnic tables. The campground accommodates RVs with a maximum spur length of 32 feet. Vault toilets serve the campground, though the official website indicates potable water is not available despite earlier references to a hand pump. Food storage in bear boxes is mandatory due to active wildlife in the area. This first-come, first-served campground operates seasonally, typically from mid-May through Labor Day depending on snow conditions. Sites cost $20 per night with a 16-day stay limit, payable by cash or check. The remote setting and wilderness access make Double Cabin Campground ideal for backcountry enthusiasts and those seeking a more primitive camping experience.
