Sheep Mountain Day Use Area is part of Buffalo Bill State Park, situated near Cody, Wyoming in Park County. The area sits at the geographic point where Sheep Mountain divides the north and south forks of the Shoshone River, offering scenic views of the surrounding landscape and reservoir. This is strictly a day-use facility and does not provide overnight camping. The area features group picnic shelters available for visitors to enjoy meals with mountain and reservoir views. For those seeking overnight accommodations, Buffalo Bill State Park offers two campgrounds: Lake Shore Campground (open year-round with 37 sites) and North Fork Campground (open May through September with 60 sites). The day-use area is closed seasonally from October through April. When open, it provides access to picnic facilities, hiking opportunities, and proximity to the reservoir's fishing areas known for trout.

Directions

From Cody, Wyoming, head west on US Highway 14/16/20 for approximately 12 miles. Turn south onto County Road 6KV, cross Gibbs Bridge, and continue to the intersection with Stagecoach Trail Road. Turn east and drive about 1.1 miles, then head south to the gravel pit. Park here or, if you have a high-clearance vehicle, continue 0.25 miles to the trailhead kiosk.
