About
Coghill Lake Cabin sits on the edge of a conifer stand next to a shallow lagoon connected to Coghill Lake, offering views of the lagoon with the Chugach Mountains and glaciers as a backdrop. The 16x16-foot A-frame cabin features a main floor and sleeping loft, wooden bunks for six, a table, benches, and a kerosene heating stove. An outhouse with pit toilet is located nearby. A small rowboat and oars are provided for exploring the lagoon and lake. The cabin is renowned for its salmon fishing opportunities. Sockeye run mid-June through July, pink and chum in July and August, and coho in August and September. Dolly Varden trout fishing is excellent May through October. Adventurous visitors can hike in with packrafts and float out the Class 1-2 Coghill River, though a fish counting weir near the lake outlet requires portage during mid-summer. This is genuine wilderness, home to black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, bald eagles, waterfowl, and river otters. Salmonberries and blueberries are abundant in season. Access is by floatplane (typically 50 minutes from Anchorage or 60 minutes from Cordova) or via an arduous 3-mile trail from Port Wells requiring route-finding through thick brush. In fall, winter, and spring, frozen lake surfaces can prevent floatplane access. Guests must bring all supplies including sleeping pads, sleeping bags, cook stove, kerosene for heating, water purification, toilet paper, and food.
Directions
Not accessible by road. Located on the southwest shore of Coghill Lake on a lagoon near the Coghill River, east side of College Fiord in Prince William Sound. Access via floatplane (50 minutes from Anchorage or 60 minutes from Cordova) or primitive 3-mile trail from Port Wells requiring backcountry navigation through thick brush.
