About
Italio River Cabin is a remote 14x20-ft A-frame cabin situated on the west bank of Hooligan Creek, approximately half a mile from the Old Italio River and the Gulf of Alaska. Located 30 miles southeast of Yakutat in the Tongass National Forest, this wilderness retreat is accessible only by wheeled plane. The nearby 1,600x100-ft airstrip sits on tidal flats and may flood during extreme high tides or heavy rains, so visitors should consult tide charts before planning their trip. The cabin sleeps six people with two single bunks and a sleeping loft. Interior amenities include a table with benches, broom, and an oil heater. Outside, guests will find a picnic table, campfire ring, pit toilet outhouse, and a 12x12-ft meat shed for processing game. Water, electricity, and heating oil are not provided. Visitors must bring drinking water, #1 stove oil for the heater, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, lanterns, toilet paper, garbage bags, and fire starting materials. The Old Italio, New Italio, and Akwe River systems offer outstanding fishing for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and steelhead, as well as sockeye, pink, king, and coho salmon. Moose hunting in this area ranges from good to excellent. Large populations of moose and brown bears inhabit the surrounding brush, willow, alder thickets, and cottonwoods. Bald eagles, ravens, and gulls are commonly seen along the river.
