About
Raven Cabin, formerly known as Middle Situk South Cabin, is located on the east bank of the Situk River about 8 air miles east of Yakutat. The cabin sits on relatively flat terrain in old-growth forest consisting of spruce, hemlock, and cottonwood with blueberry bush understory. While the river is nearby, it cannot be seen from the cabin. Access is via a 3-mile trail from Nine Mile Bridge on Forest Highway 10, a 3.2-mile float downriver from Nine Mile Bridge, 9.6 miles upriver from Situk Landing, or by wheeled aircraft to the Forest Service-maintained airstrip located about 300 feet from the cabin. The trail is relatively flat but can flood and has numerous root wads making walking moderately difficult. It fords the Old Situk River but does not follow the Situk River banks. The Situk River offers outstanding fishing for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, steelhead, and sockeye, pink, king, and coho salmon. Moose hunting is good to excellent in the area. Visitors can bring inflatable rafts, kayaks, and canoes, though the river can be dangerous for inexperienced boaters. Large populations of moose and brown bears live in this area, and bald eagles and ravens are common.
