About
Raven Cabin, formerly known as Middle Situk South Cabin, sits on relatively flat terrain in old-growth forest of spruce, hemlock, and cottonwood along the Situk River. The river itself is not visible from the cabin but is nearby. The area supports large populations of moose and brown bears, with bald eagles and ravens common throughout. The Situk River offers outstanding fishing for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and steelhead, as well as sockeye, pink, king, and coho salmon. Moose hunting in the area ranges from good to excellent. Visitors can bring inflatable rafts, kayaks, and canoes; guided boating trips and rentals are available from nearby lodges. The river can be dangerous for inexperienced boaters. Visitors must bring their own water, heating fuel (#1 diesel or kerosene), sleeping bags, cookware, flashlights, toilet paper, garbage bags, and fire extinguisher. All trash must be packed out. Food should be stored properly to minimize bear conflicts.
Directions
Located 8 air miles east of Yakutat on the east bank of Situk River. From Nine Mile Bridge on Forest Highway 10, hike the 3-mile trail or boat 3.2 miles downriver (approximately 1.5-hour float). The cabin is 9.6 miles upriver from Situk Landing at the terminus of Lost River Road. A Forest Service-maintained airstrip (1,800 feet long, 50 feet wide) is about 300 feet from the cabin.
