About
Situk Lake Cabin sits on the eastern shore of Situk Lake in the Russell Fjord Wilderness, surrounded by old-growth Sitka spruce forest. The 16x12-ft pan-abode style cabin sleeps four people on single bunks and is furnished with a table, benches, picnic table, broom, and axe. A multi-fuel stove burns #1 diesel, kerosene, or wood for heat, though visitors must supply their own fuel. An outhouse is provided, but there is no potable water or electricity. The lake offers outstanding fishing for king, sockeye, coho, and pink salmon, as well as steelhead, rainbow trout, and Dolly Varden. A skiff with oars is available for lake use, but visitors must bring their own personal flotation devices. The Mountain Lake Trail departs from the cabin for a 4-mile round-trip hike through old-growth forest to Mountain Lake, with views of the Brabazon Mountains. On clear days, Mount St. Elias is visible from the lake. Wildlife in the area includes brown and black bears, moose, bald eagles, and trumpeter swans. The area attracts nesting waterfowl. Access is by floatplane or the 3.1-mile Situk Lake Trail, which starts at the end of East Gate Road and can be very wet. Hunting is permitted in season with appropriate permits.
