About

Harlequin Lake Shelter is a remote A-frame building with a wall separating the north and south halves into two distinct rooms. Located on a landing strip approximately one mile from Harlequin Lake in the Yakutat Ranger District of Tongass National Forest, this shelter serves as a basecamp for backcountry adventures in a lightly-used area of southeast Alaska. Access requires driving the 32-mile Forest Highway 10 (Dangerous River Road) to its terminus, followed by a half-mile hike along a maintained trail that leads up to the airstrip where the shelter sits. The road is not maintained during winter months but remains accessible by snowmobile for winter recreationists with adequate fuel supplies. The surrounding area provides excellent opportunities for hiking, berry picking, ATV riding, snowmobiling, hunting, and some fishing. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis year-round and features a pit toilet. Visitors must bring their own water as no potable water is available on-site.

Directions

Located at the end of Forest Highway 10 (Dangerous River Road), approximately 32 miles from Yakutat. From the end of the road, take the trail to the right that leads up onto the airstrip. The shelter is a half-mile hike from the trailhead. Note: The road is not maintained in winter but is accessible by snowmobile.
