About
Harlequin Lake Shelter is a remote two-room A-frame structure divided by an interior wall separating north and south sections. Located on a landing strip about a mile from Harlequin Lake in the Yakutat Ranger District of the Tongass National Forest, this primitive backcountry shelter provides basic overnight accommodations including wooden bunks, a table with benches, and an oil stove for heating. Access requires driving the full 32-mile length of Forest Service Highway 10, also known as Dangerous River Road, which is not maintained in winter but remains accessible by snowmobile. From the road's end, take the right trail to reach the airstrip shelter via a short half-mile hike. Visitors should bring substantial fuel for the lengthy drive. The surrounding area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, berry picking, ATV and snowmobile use, hunting, and some fishing. This is a truly remote location with light usage, suitable for self-sufficient campers comfortable with primitive conditions in Alaska's backcountry.
Directions
From Yakutat, take Forest Service Highway 10 (Dangerous River Road) for approximately 32 miles to its end. The road is not maintained in winter. From the road terminus, take the right trail and hike approximately half a mile to reach the shelter on the landing strip.
