About
Alsek River Cabin sits on open muskeg terrain with dense patches of alder, cottonwood, and willow, beneath the snow-capped peaks of the Brabazon Mountain Range. Located 55 miles southeast of Yakutat in the Tongass National Forest, the cabin is primarily used for fall moose hunting, though mountain goat hunting is excellent in the Brabazon Range two miles east. Brown and black bears are common, and sandhill cranes pass through during spring and fall migrations. The 14x16-foot cabin accommodates four guests on single wooden bunks. It includes a table, benches, broom, oil heater, and food preparation space, with an outhouse, picnic table, and meat shed located outside. Visitors must be entirely self-sufficient: no water, electricity, or heating fuel is provided. Pack #1 diesel or kerosene (one gallon lasts 2-10 hours), drinking water, sleeping gear, cook stove, food, lantern, toilet paper, garbage bags, and fire extinguisher. Hip boots are recommended due to wet terrain. Access is by wheeled plane only, landing on the adjacent 1,800x50-foot airstrip. Guests arrange their own bush plane charter. All trash must be packed out, and the cabin should be cleaned before departure.
