About
Alsek River Cabin sits on the remote Yakutat Forelands approximately 55 miles southeast of Yakutat, about a mile from the Alsek River, a large glacier-fed river known for its dramatic scenery. This 14x16-foot hunter-style cabin sleeps four people on wooden bunks and includes basic amenities: a table, benches, food preparation space, an oil heater, and a broom. Outside facilities include an outhouse, picnic table, and a 12x12-foot meat shed for processing game. The terrain is flat and very wet, characterized by open muskeg with dense patches of alder, cottonwood, and willow. The snow-capped peaks of the Brabazon Mountain Range dominate the eastern horizon. Brown and black bears are common in the area, and moose frequent the willow thickets. Sandhill cranes stop here during spring and fall migrations, and wild strawberries grow around the airstrip. The cabin is primarily used for hunting, with excellent moose hunting in the surrounding area and mountain goat hunting in the Brabazon Range. Access is by wheeled plane only, landing on the adjacent 1,800x50-foot airstrip. Visitors must bring their own water, #1 diesel oil or kerosene for heating, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, and all supplies. Hip boots are recommended for navigating the wet terrain.
