About
Cannon Beach Campground is a primitive coastal camping site located in the Tongass National Forest near Yakutat. This is the second of three tent platforms positioned along the scenic beach bluff northwest of the historic WWII-era Cannons at Cannon Beach. The campground consists of a single tent platform that can be covered with a tarp, accompanied by a picnic table and fire ring. Perched on the bluff overlooking the Gulf of Alaska, the site provides direct access to the beach below, making it popular with beachcombers, surfers taking advantage of Yakutat's renowned waves, and visitors exploring the remote coastline. The area sees heavy use due to its coastal location and proximity to the Cannon Beach historical sites. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with the Yakutat area known for abundant seabirds including Marbled Murrelets, Arctic Terns, and Aleutian Terns. This is a primitive, undeveloped site suited for tent camping only. Campers should come prepared for coastal Alaska conditions and be bear aware, as the Tongass is prime bear habitat. The campground is accessible via forest roads from Yakutat Airport, requiring travel along Cannon Beach Road and forest service roads to reach the blufftop location.
Directions
From Yakutat Airport, drive on Cannon Beach Road (FS Road 9963) for 2.3 miles toward the beach. Just past Tawah Creek Bridge, turn right onto FS Road 9968. Continue 1.1 miles along FS Road 9968; the second tent platform is on the left.
