About
Situated on a bluff overlooking the Gulf of Alaska near the remote town of Yakutat, Cannon Beach Campground offers primitive tent camping with spectacular coastal scenery. The site is one of three tent platforms positioned northwest of rusting WWII-era cannons that give the beach its name. Each platform is elevated above the sandy terrain and can be covered with a tarp for weather protection. The Yakutat Ranger District is the northernmost district of Tongass National Forest, characterized by tall mountains, massive glaciers, and sandy beaches unusual for Southeast Alaska. The Gulf of Alaska setting provides waves suitable for surfing and world-class fishing opportunities. Visitors use this site for beachcombing, walking the shoreline, surfing, and enjoying campfires with ocean views. This is a primitive, first-come-first-served camping area with no potable water on site. Campers should bring all drinking water and supplies. A vault toilet serves the Cannon Beach area. The site sees heavy use during summer months due to its accessibility and scenic location.
Directions
Drive on Cannon Beach Road (FS 9963) 2.3 miles from Airport Road toward the beach. Just past Tawah Creek Bridge, turn right on FS Road 9968. Drive an additional 1.1 miles along FS Road 9968; the second of three tent platforms is on the left.
