About
Kaats'Heeni Yanshuka, known by the Forest Service as Nine Mile Campground, sits along the Situk River approximately 9 miles from Yakutat via Forest Highway 10 (Dangerous River Road). The Situk River is one of the most productive salmon and steelhead systems in Southeast Alaska and the National Forest System, making this campground a strategic basecamp for anglers. The Nine Mile boat launch provides fishing access to nearly 14 miles of river, with trail access both upstream and downstream from the bridge. The campground offers six tent platforms designed to keep campers dry in the frequently soggy conditions of coastal Alaska. A CXT vault toilet is on site, though no potable water is available. Campers must bring adequate drinking water and pack out all trash. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fee and no reservations. This is bear country. River otters, mink, moose, and both brown and black bears frequent the area, congregating along the Situk to feed on salmon. Proper food storage and maintaining a clean camp are essential to minimize wildlife conflicts.
Directions
From Yakutat, drive 9 miles out Dangerous River Road (Forest Highway 10). Continue until you reach the Situk River. Just before the bridge, turn right into the campground.
