About
Eagle Cabin, formerly known as Middle Situk North Cabin, sits on relatively flat terrain in old-growth forest of spruce, hemlock, and cottonwood along the Situk River in the Yakutat Ranger District of Tongass National Forest. The river is nearby but not visible from the cabin. Large populations of moose and brown bears inhabit the area, and bald eagles, ravens, and gulls are commonly seen. The Situk River offers outstanding fishing for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and steelhead, as well as sockeye, pink, king, and coho salmon. The area also provides good moose hunting opportunities. Visitors can bring inflatable rafts, kayaks, or canoes, though the river can be dangerous for inexperienced boaters. The cabin is a 14x16-ft pan-abode structure sleeping five people on three single bunks and one double bunk. Amenities include a table and benches, oil heater, outdoor picnic table, outhouse, campfire ring, and a 10x10-ft meat shed for hunters. Potable water, heating oil, and electricity are not provided. Visitors must bring their own water or treat water from the river, and must pack out all trash to minimize bear conflicts.
Directions
Located 8 air miles east of Yakutat on the east bank of Situk River. From Nine Mile Bridge on Forest Highway 10, hike the 3-mile Situk River Trail or float 3.2 miles downriver (approximately 1.5-hour float). The cabin is 9.6 miles upriver from Situk Landing at the terminus of Lost River Road. A Forest Service-maintained airstrip (1,800 ft long, 50 ft wide) is located about 300 feet from the cabin for wheeled aircraft access.
