About

Island Park Recreation Area is located on Pine Flat Lake in the foothills of the central Sierra Nevada Mountains where oak and pine forests meet. The lake, created in 1954 with the completion of Pine Flat Dam, spans 20 miles with 67 miles of shoreline and serves as a recreation oasis for water sports enthusiasts. The campground offers a variety of sites including standard campsites, tent-only sites, and two group areas with amenities like horseshoe pits and volleyball courts. Twenty-five sites feature electric hookups, and five of those also include water hookups. One accessible site is available first-come, first-served. All campers have access to flush toilets, and day-use visitors can utilize vault toilets and a boat ramp. Pine Flat Lake is popular for boating, jet skiing, and fishing for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, spotted bass, and rainbow trout. The Blue Oak Trail provides an easy quarter-mile interpretive walk accessible from the campground. Wildlife viewing opportunities include bobcats and red-tailed hawks. The campground is well-positioned for exploring Kings Canyon and Sierra National Forest, with whitewater rafting available upstream on the Kings River during spring and early summer.

Directions

From Fresno, travel east on Highway 180/Kings Canyon Highway to Academy Avenue. Turn left onto Academy Avenue, then right on Belmont Avenue. Continue approximately 20 miles; the entrance to Island Park Recreation Area is on the right. Belmont Avenue becomes East Trimmer Springs Road approximately 6 miles east of the Academy Avenue intersection.
