About
Camp Four and a Half Cabin is a historic cabin rental located along the Kings River above Pine Flat Reservoir at 1,100 feet elevation in Sequoia National Forest, within Giant Sequoia National Monument. Originally built in 1957 as a residence and office for Forest Service rangers, the cabin was restored by dedicated volunteers and employees and converted to an overnight rental for the public. The two-bedroom, one-bath cabin sleeps up to six people with two twin beds, a queen bed, and a double hide-a-bed. The kitchen features a propane stove, refrigerator, table with benches, and cooking supplies including dishes and pots. A generator provides electricity, and the cabin has both a heater and swamp cooler for climate control. The bathroom includes a tub/shower combination. Outside, guests have access to five lawn chairs, a grill, picnic table, and space for tent camping. Guests can fish, swim, kayak, or whitewater raft in the Kings River, though the river is swift and dangerous at peak flows from April through June. The section from Garnet Dike to Pine Flat Lake is open to fishing year-round with a two-fish limit. Nearby trails offer hiking and horseback riding on both sides of the river, and the area is excellent for wildlife viewing, bird watching, and stargazing far from city lights.
Directions
From Fresno, California take Highway 180 to Academy Avenue. Turn left (north) and proceed one mile to the intersection with Belmont Avenue. Turn right (east) on Belmont. Proceed east on Belmont which turns into Trimmer Springs Road. In about 13 miles you will pass through the tiny community of Piedra, your last opportunity to purchase supplies and gas. After about 42 miles you will cross the Kings River bridge and continue onto paved Forest Service Road 12S01. The road turns to dirt after a mile, and the cabin is located nearly a mile further down 12S01.
