About
Bretz Mill Campground is located along Big Creek in Sierra National Forest, set among pines and oak trees at a lower elevation that makes it accessible year-round. Some campsites are positioned directly on the creek, providing opportunities for picnicking and cooling off during warm weather. The campground serves as a popular base camp for OHV enthusiasts exploring the surrounding forest roads and trails. The facility operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or reservations required. Access is via paved roads, though the campground is remote with no cell phone service and nearest services located 40-45 minutes away in Prather or Shaver Lake. The campground is maintained by the Mountain Toppers 4WD club. Campers must bring all their own water as none is provided on-site, and pack out all trash as there is no garbage service. Vault toilets are available, and each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Maximum vehicle length is 24 feet, with a 14-day stay limit and maximum of 6 people per site. The campground's lower elevation makes it an excellent alternative when higher Sierra campgrounds remain closed by snow in spring and fall.
Directions
From Fresno travel east on Highway 168 through Prather to the 4-way stop at the park and ride. Turn left toward Shaver Lake and travel 8.8 miles, then turn right on Tollhouse Road. Travel 0.7 miles and turn left on Peterson Road. Continue 10.7 miles as Peterson Road becomes Forest Road 10S02, then travel 4 more miles and turn left into the campground.
