About

Established in 1964 on 912 acres along Lake Renwick's north shore, Icelandic State Park showcases North Dakota's homesteading heritage while providing modern camping amenities. The campground features three loops with 134 electric and water sites, 7 double-occupancy sites for multiple units, and 10 primitive sites, connected by paved roads suitable for large RVs. The park offers extensive recreational opportunities year-round. Summer activities include boating on Lake Renwick, swimming at the beach, and fishing for northern pike. The boat ramp and courtesy dock provide easy water access. Winter visitors enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on groomed trails. The Gunlogson Nature Preserve, North Dakota's first designated state nature preserve, protects 200 acres of woodland along the Tongue River with more than a dozen rare plant species and habitat for Pileated Woodpeckers and River Otters. Historic attractions include the Pioneer Heritage Center with homesteading exhibits, the restored Akra Community Hall, and Hallson Church. Over 4 miles of trails wind through the park and preserve, with footbridges crossing natural springs and the Tongue River. Additional amenities include a playground, dog park, amphitheater, and picnic shelters under old oak trees.
