About

Cottonwood Crest is a primitive tent campground within Turtle River State Park, originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Located in a rare wooded valley along the meandering Turtle River, the park provides an oasis of trees in the North Dakota prairie. The campground offers secluded sites surrounded by mature ash trees, ideal for tent camping and tipi setups. The park features over 13 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, with the Turtle River stocked with rainbow trout for fly fishing. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and sledding on groomed trails. Primitive campers have access to vault toilets in their camping area and can use modern facilities at the main campground, including showers, flush toilets, and a dump station. The visitor center sells firewood and ice.
