About
Hunter Peak Campground is located on the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway approximately 4 miles south of the junction with the Beartooth Highway and 60 miles northeast of Cody, Wyoming. The campground sits on the banks of the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River at an elevation of 6,500 feet, surrounded by mixed conifer forest. The campground offers 10 single-family campsites, each equipped with a table and campfire ring. The Clarks Fork provides outstanding fishing opportunities for rainbow and cutthroat trout, and the Clarks Fork Trailhead is located directly across the highway from the campground. The area is home to grizzly bears, deer, and elk, requiring proper food storage at all times. The campground is positioned along the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway and near the Beartooth All-American Road, which Charles Kuralt called "the most beautiful drive in America." Yellowstone National Park's northeast entrance is approximately 24 miles northwest via the Beartooth Highway, offering access to world-class wildlife viewing and geological features.
Directions
From Cody, travel north on State Highway 120 for 16 miles, then turn left onto State Highway 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Highway) and proceed about 43 miles to the campground on the left. From Red Lodge or the northeast entrance of Yellowstone, travel on U.S. Highway 212 (Beartooth Highway) to the junction with State Highway 296, then take Highway 296 approximately 5 miles south to the campground on the right.
