About

Island Lake Campground occupies a stunning location beside a high mountain lake along the Beartooth All-American Highway (US-212) in northwest Wyoming. At roughly 9,500 feet elevation, the campground provides a true alpine camping experience with panoramic views of the Beartooth Mountains and access to pristine backcountry. The 21 newly remodeled sites accommodate tents and smaller RVs up to 32 feet. Fishing is a primary draw here, with rainbow and brook trout available from shore, by wading, or via the boat launch once winter ice clears. Float tubes and motorized boats are permitted. Beyond fishing, visitors enjoy day hikes into the surrounding wilderness, wildlife watching for moose, elk, and bears, and photographing the abundant wildflowers that carpet the meadows in summer. The campground operates first-come, first-served with no reservations. Amenities include vault toilets, potable water from a hand pump, picnic tables, and bear boxes for required food storage. There is no cell service, no trash collection (pack it out), and no hookups. The 16-day stay limit and remote location make this an ideal base for extended backcountry exploration.
