About

Dead Indian Campground sits at approximately 8,000 feet elevation on the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway in the Clarks Fork Ranger District of Shoshone National Forest. The 10-site campground provides a staging point for wilderness exploration, with a trailhead across the highway leading along Dead Indian Creek, through the Absaroka Wilderness and Dead Indian Meadows, and up to the summit of Dead Indian Peak. The campground offers basic amenities including vault toilets, potable water from a hand pump, and picnic tables. Bear boxes are provided for required food storage in this active bear habitat. Adjacent corrals across Highway 296 accommodate horses and pack animals. Sites have a maximum spur length of 32 feet, making this campground better suited for tent camping and smaller RVs. The south loop remains open during winter months without services or fees for those seeking off-season access. The 16-day stay limit applies during the regular season. Cash or check payment only.
