M-k Campground
Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Full service from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season there are no services, the campground is not maintained, and roads are not plowed. Campers should bring their own water and pack out all trash during winter months. Access is snow-dependent. 16-day stay limit.
Hydrologic Outlook issued May 10 at 3:45PM MDT by NWS Billings MT
ESFBYZ Warm temperatures reaching 10 to 20 degrees above normal will enhance snowmelt in the mountains this week, resulting in significantly higher flows on area waterways. Flooding is not expected at this time due to marginal remaining snowpack in the middle elevations between 6000 and 8000 feet. Rivers such as the Yellowstone and Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone are forecast to see flows double the current flows by the end of the week. Smaller streams and creeks flowing out of the mountains will experience rises first this week, with larger rivers and streams further downstream seeing increases by the end of the week. Those with interests along foothills waterways should be prepared for higher water levels this week, and move property and livestock away from rivers, streams, and low lying areas. Runoff may fill culverts, ditches, and storm drains causing water to flow over foothills roadways potentially causing damage. Do not drive over flooded roadways, Turn Around Don't Drown. Recreationists in the mountains and foothills should be prepared for changing conditions and use extra caution when near waterways. Flows will be faster, and the water is very cold. Stay tuned to the forecast. Please report any flooding to local law enforcement and have them relay the report to the National Weather Service.
About
M-K Campground sits at the gateway to some of Montana's most spectacular high-country terrain, located 3 miles up the Main Fork Rock Creek Road near the famous Beartooth Highway. This free, primitive campground honors the Morrison-Knudsen civil engineering company that constructed the Beartooth Highway's dramatic switchbacks between 1932 and 1936, their original camp approximately where the modern campground stands today. The campground offers 10 sites on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservations accepted. Sites accommodate RVs and trailers up to 20 feet and include bear-resistant food storage lockers at some locations. The Main Fork Rock Creek drainage provides access to excellent hiking opportunities, including Mount Maurice Trail, Corral Creek Trail, Beartrack Trail, Lake Fork Trail, Parkside National Recreation Trail, Hellroaring Plateau Trail, and Glacier Lake Trail. During the off-season, the campground remains accessible but services are limited. The road is not plowed, and access is snow-dependent. Main Fork Rock Creek Road is rocky and bumpy, especially beyond M-K Campground, and high-clearance vehicles are recommended. The 16-day stay limit ensures turnover during busy summer periods when the campground can fill on weekends and holidays.
Directions
From Red Lodge, drive south on US Highway 212 for 10.9 miles. Turn right onto Main Fork Rock Creek Road (Forest Road 2421). Drive 0.9 miles past Parkside, Greenough, and Limber Pine Campgrounds. Note: Main Fork Road is bumpy and rocky with high-clearance vehicles recommended.
