Kersey Lake Cabin is a historic Forest Service rental cabin situated in the dramatic Beartooth Mountains of the Custer Gallatin National Forest in Park County, Montana. The cabin sits at high elevation near Kersey Lake, a scenic alpine lake accessible via the Clarks Fork Trailhead off US Highway 212 between Cooke City and Red Lodge. The surrounding area offers outstanding opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing in pristine mountain terrain adjacent to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. The Beartooth Mountains are known for rugged alpine scenery, abundant wildlife including grizzly bears, moose, and eagles, and relatively short hiking access to alpine lakes. Visitors should be prepared for a rustic backcountry experience and practice proper food storage in bear country. Access to the cabin area is typically via US Highway 212, which is subject to seasonal closures due to snow. The highway generally opens in late May and closes in early to mid-October depending on weather conditions.

Directions

From Cooke City, Montana, travel approximately 3.4 miles east on US Highway 212 toward the Clarks Fork Trailhead area. From Red Lodge, Montana, travel approximately 58 miles west on US Highway 212. Access is dependent on seasonal road conditions; US Highway 212 over Beartooth Pass typically opens late May and closes in October.
