About
Lake Creek Campground is a small, secluded campground containing six sites along Lake Creek in the Shoshone National Forest. Situated at 6,400 feet elevation off the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway (State Highway 296), the campground provides a base for exploring the Absaroka Range and the surrounding wilderness. The campground offers basic amenities including vault toilets, picnic tables, and bear boxes for food storage. Potable water is not available, so campers must bring their own supply. The maximum spur length is 22 feet, making it suitable for tents, truck campers, and small trailers but not larger RVs. Food storage in the provided bear boxes is required due to active bear populations in the area. Recreational opportunities include fishing in Lake Creek, wildlife viewing, scenic drives along the Chief Joseph Highway, and access to day hikes and backpacking routes in the surrounding forest. The 16-day stay limit allows for extended visits. Payment is cash or check only, and Interagency Senior/Access passes receive a 50% discount on the single site fee.
Directions
From Cody, take State Highway 120 north for 16 miles. Turn left onto State Highway 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Highway) and proceed approximately 46 miles to the campground.
