About

Hungerford Trail Camp, also known as Hungerford Equestrian Group Campsite, is perched along lightly rolling hills in the Manistee National Forest, approximately a mile north of 30-acre Hungerford Lake. This group campsite is designed specifically for equestrian campers and provides direct access to the extensive trail system in the Hungerford Recreation Area. The campground serves as a gateway to over 50 miles of trails, including 47+ miles dedicated to horseback riding and 10 miles for mountain biking. The horse trails connect directly to the campsite, allowing riders easy access to explore the diverse terrain of hardwood, pine, and birch forests. Mountain bikers enjoy smooth singletrack with numerous short climbs and descents throughout the area. Nearby Hungerford Lake and surrounding waters like Toogood Lake and Mud Lake provide additional recreational opportunities. While horses are not permitted in the lake area, campers can enjoy fishing for bass, pike, and panfish, or use the boat ramp for lake access. The location is particularly popular in fall when vibrant autumn colors reflect across the lake's surface.
