About

Hungerford Lake Recreation Area Campground is a specialized equestrian campground situated in the Hungerford Recreation Area within Manistee National Forest. This horse-friendly facility features eight individual campsites, each designed to accommodate one large horse trailer, two vehicles, and up to eight people. The campground provides amenities specifically for equestrian campers, including picnic tables, lantern posts, fire rings, and picket poles for highlining horses at each site. A shared manure disposal area is available for responsible waste management. The campground serves as a gateway to over 50 miles of designated horse trails that wind through the 6,500-acre Hungerford Recreation Area, a nonmotorized area characterized by lightly rolling hills in mixed hardwood and pine forest. The Marzinski Trail system, accessible from the campground, offers loops of varying lengths for rides through mostly flat terrain. While the campground is located near the 30-acre Hungerford Lake, horses are not permitted in or around the lake area. However, campers are welcome to fish for bass, pike, and panfish, and a boat ramp is available at the lake. The campground is big rig friendly with sites designed for large horse trailers and RVs.
