Hungerford Equestrian Group Campsite is located in the Manistee National Forest, positioned along lightly rolling hills about one mile north of the 30-acre Hungerford Lake. This group campsite is designed specifically for equestrian campers and provides direct trail access to over 47 miles of horseback riding trails that wind through mixed hardwood and pine forests. The trail system accommodates varying skill levels and connects to the broader Hungerford Recreation Area trail network. The campground also offers access to 10 miles of mountain biking trails, making it a destination for both equestrian enthusiasts and other outdoor recreationists. While horses are welcome at the campsite and on the extensive trail system, they are not permitted in or around Hungerford Lake. The lake itself offers excellent fishing opportunities for bass, pike, and panfish, with a boat ramp available for visitor use. The area is particularly scenic during fall color season. The group campsite requires reservations through Recreation.gov and can accommodate large groups with horse trailers and RVs. Water is available on-site, though groups will need to bring a 5,000-watt generator for water pump operation. The campground sits within the nearly one-million-acre Huron-Manistee National Forests, which stretch between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

From Big Rapids on US-131: Take M-20 west 8.5 miles to Cypress Ave. Go 0.5 miles north on Cypress Ave. Turn right on Hungerford Lake Drive and proceed 0.5 miles. Turn north on FR5134 and travel 2 miles to the group campsite.
