Hudner Ranch Primitive Campground sits within Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area's dedicated 4x4 recreation zone in Monterey County. The two remote campsites, Hudner Pass and Ohlone, provide a secluded backcountry experience for tent campers willing to navigate the rugged access roads. The surrounding 1,500-acre Hudner Ranch area features approximately 30 miles of trails winding through rolling hills, oak grasslands, and scenic terrain with panoramic views of the Gabilan Mountains. Access requires a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle; standard passenger cars and vehicles towing trailers cannot reach the campground. All visitors must check in at the Lower Ranch Main Entrance on Cienega Road before proceeding to Hudner Ranch, located approximately 0.5 miles north. Amenities are minimal: pit toilets and food storage lockers are provided, but there is no potable water. The area's unique adobe clay soil creates seasonal closure conditions during wet periods for both safety and erosion prevention. Wood and charcoal fires are prohibited during fire season and red flag warnings, though propane stoves remain permitted. These are the only reservable campsites in the 4x4 area, bookable through ReserveCalifornia.

Directions

From Highway 101, take the Bolsa Road exit in Hollister and head east. Continue to Union Road, then turn left onto Cienega Road. The Lower Ranch Main Entrance is at 7800 Cienega Road, Hollister, CA 95023. All vehicles must check in here before proceeding to Hudner Ranch, located approximately 0.5 miles north of the main entrance on Cienega Road.
