About

Horseshoe Lake Recreation Area is an equestrian-style campground located on the Washburn Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, north of Ino, Wisconsin. Designed primarily for horse camping but open to all campers, the facility features 9 family camping units and 1 group site. Each family site accommodates up to 8 people and 4 vehicles, while the group site allows up to 14 people. All sites feature highlines for horses, with both back-in (sites 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7) and pull-through sites (sites 3 and 8) available. The campground provides vault toilets, two manure pits, and garbage service. Water is available on-site but is non-potable, so campers must bring their own drinking water. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings. A day-use parking area is available for trail riders not staying overnight. The Horseshoe Lake Saddle Trail system offers 12 miles of riding opportunities across three overlapping loops: A Loop (9.25 miles), B Loop (3.7 miles), and Outside Loop (10.25 miles). The terrain is gently rolling with sandy loam surface ideal for horse riding, weaving through towering pine and hardwood forests as well as open barrens. Forest roads in the area are also open to horseback riding. The nearby Moquah Barrens provides additional opportunities for wildlife viewing, bird watching, and berry picking. OHV use is prohibited in the campground, though open OHV roads provide access to the Iron River Trail.
