About

Hondo Cabin is a historic Forest Service lookout and cabin situated along NM State Highway 150 in the scenic corridor between Valdez and Taos Ski Valley in northern New Mexico's Carson National Forest. The cabin sits at approximately 9,000 feet elevation in Taos County, offering access to the nearby Columbine-Hondo and Wheeler Peak wilderness areas. The Forest Service completed a rental readiness project for the Hondo Cabin in May 2025, which included site improvements such as replacement of existing vault toilets, installation of picnic tables and oversized fire rings, improved driveways and parking areas, and new fencing. These improvements were made to prepare the cabin for public rental through the Forest Service recreation rental program. The cabin provides a rustic mountain experience near outstanding hiking, fishing on the Rio Hondo, and winter access to Taos Ski Valley. Visitors should check with the Carson National Forest Questa Ranger District for current availability and reservation information.
