About
Hondo Cabin is a historic Forest Service ranger cabin built around 1913 along the Rio Hondo on State Road 150, approximately 12 miles from Taos near the entrance to Taos Ski Valley. Originally known as the South Fork Ranger Station, named after a mine and mill located across the Rio Hondo, this cabin served as the gateway to the high country until the mid-1950s when the highway was extended to Twining. The cabin was part of the Manzanita Forest Camp C Recreation Area designated in 1955. The structure remains in remarkable condition, with original white-washed latilla ceilings in a herringbone pattern and plank flooring still within a quarter inch of level after over 100 years. The five-acre site includes an old corral still used by grazing permittees and a platform overlooking the Rio Hondo. The cabin has been restored by volunteers from the National Smokejumper Association working with the Carson National Forest, including repairs to the stone porch and roof replacement. The Carson National Forest has explored offering the cabin for public rental through a reservation system or potentially as a group camping site with tent camping. The site is located near the Manzanita Canyon Trailhead and provides access to the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Area.
