Cuchilla Campground is a small, free primitive campground nestled along the Rio Hondo in the Carson National Forest at 7,800 feet elevation. Located 13 miles north of Taos on State Highway 230 along the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, the campground offers 3 sites suitable for tents and small trailers under 22 feet. Each site has a picnic table, and a vault toilet is provided. No potable water is available; stream water from the Rio Hondo is not recommended for drinking. The campground serves as a gateway to backcountry recreation in the Questa Ranger District. The Rio Hondo flows along the campground providing fishing opportunities. The Yerba Canyon Trail (#61) is a short walk away, and trailheads for the Columbine Hondo Wilderness Study Area lie several miles northeast on Highway 230. The high-elevation setting delivers cool summer temperatures and scenic mountain views.

Directions

From Taos, drive 13 miles north on State Highway 230 (toward Taos Ski Valley). The campground is along the highway near the Rio Hondo.
