About
Cuchillo Del Medio is one of three small campgrounds along Highway 150, the paved scenic road leading to Taos Ski Valley. The campground sits at approximately 8,600 feet elevation in a mixed conifer forest of spruce-fir and aspen, providing welcome shade and a cool mountain atmosphere. The Rio Hondo flows adjacent to the campground, offering immediate access to stream fishing for brown and rainbow trout. With only three campsites, this is an intimate and quiet camping spot best suited for tent campers or those with small trailers up to 16 feet. Each site has a picnic table, and the campground has one vault toilet. There is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. The campground is first-come, first-served with no reservations and no fee. The location makes it an excellent basecamp for wilderness exploration. Numerous trails into the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Study Area and Wheeler Peak Wilderness, including the route to New Mexico's highest point, are accessible from trailheads farther up Highway 150. The campground is also situated along the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway.
Directions
From Taos, head north on NM 522 for approximately 4 miles, then turn right onto NM 150 toward Taos Ski Valley. Continue approximately 9 miles on NM 150. The campground is on the right along the Rio Hondo.
