About

Twining Campground sits at 9,500 feet in a scenic aspen grove just outside Taos Ski Valley in the Carson National Forest. This small, primitive campground offers four tent sites along the Rio Hondo, each equipped with a picnic table and grill. The setting provides immediate access to some of New Mexico's best alpine hiking, with the Bull of the Woods Trailhead directly across Twining Road. The campground serves as the primary staging point for Wheeler Peak Trail #90, which leads to the state's highest summit at 13,161 feet. Other accessible trails include Williams Lake Trail #62, Long Canyon Trail #63, and Gold Hill Trail. The area is renowned for fall color, with aspens typically peaking between late September and early October. This is a pack-it-in, pack-it-out destination with no potable water. Stream water from the Rio Hondo is available but not recommended for drinking without treatment. Small trailers under 16 feet can be accommodated, though the campground is primarily designed for tent camping.
