About

Holts Landing State Park encompasses 205 acres along the southern shore of Indian River Bay in Sussex County, Delaware. Originally a family farm sold to the state in 1957, the park opened in 1965 and features a unique mix of bayshore beach, salt marsh, maritime forest, and hardwood forests. The park offers primitive group camping on three 20-acre wilderness sites located within the forest. These sites are designed for organized groups such as scout troops and other youth organizations. The primitive nature means minimal amenities at the campsites themselves, though campers can access the main park facilities including restrooms, a picnic pavilion with 80-person capacity, and over 3 miles of trails including the ADA-accessible Seahawk Trail. Water access is a highlight, with a two-lane concrete boat ramp accommodating vessels up to 25 feet, a 220-foot crabbing pier, and 2,000 feet of shoreline. The Assawoman Canal, initially dug by hand in the 1890s, draws kayakers to explore the waterways. Wildlife viewing opportunities include herons, egrets, ospreys, and white-tailed deer.
