About
Cape Henlopen State Park campground occupies a prime coastal location at the confluence of Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, near the historic town of Lewes. The recently renovated campground offers 120 RV sites with water and electric hookups (30, 50, and 100 amp available), 43 walk-in tent sites in a more primitive setting, and 12 cabins that sleep six guests each. Amenities include a camp store, laundry facility, multiple bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers, fire rings and picnic tables at each site, and a playground for families. The park itself spans over 5,000 acres of diverse coastal habitats including ocean and bay beaches, towering sand dunes, maritime forests, and tidal salt marshes. Campers have access to miles of multi-use trails for hiking and biking, including the popular Gordons Pond Trail. The park offers swimming beaches, a fishing pier, disc golf course, and nature center. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, particularly for shorebirds and migratory species. The Point area closes seasonally (March through August) to protect nesting piping plovers and other threatened species. The campground operates year-round and accepts reservations up to one year in advance through the Delaware State Parks reservation system. Summer weekends fill quickly, especially near holidays. Pull-through sites can accommodate larger RVs up to 90+ feet, though most back-in sites have length limits ranging from 15 to 45 feet. The main park entrance accommodates RVs up to 40 feet. Note that slide-outs are not permitted on even-numbered sites in Loop A.
Directions
From Route 1 south, take the Cape Henlopen State Park exit and follow signs to the park entrance. The main entrance can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. Gordons Pond and Herring Point entrances have a 30-foot vehicle limit.
