P.J. Hoffmaster State Park Campground sits on three miles of stunning Lake Michigan shoreline south of Muskegon, offering one of Michigan's premier camping experiences among towering forested dunes. The modern campground features 297 generously-sized sites divided into three loops, shaded by mature oaks, maples, beech and pine trees. Most sites include 20/30-amp electrical service with some offering 50-amp, and the campground provides modern restroom and shower buildings, a sanitation station, and recycling facilities. Four semi-modern sites without electric service and two ADA-accessible sites with crushed limestone surfaces are also available. The park's natural attractions include dramatic sand dunes, 10 miles of scenic trails, and direct beach access within a five-minute walk from the campground. The Dune Overlook Trail features an approximately half-mile roundtrip climb with about 220 steps leading to panoramic Lake Michigan views, while the 2-mile Homestead Trail offers a more gradual route to the shoreline. The Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center perched atop a large dune provides educational exhibits about dune formation and ecology. Winter visitors enjoy three miles of groomed cross-country ski trails and snowshoeing opportunities. The campground also offers beach wheelchairs and a track chair for enhanced accessibility.
