About

Highland Recreation Area Campground is a 25-site rustic facility located within Highland State Recreation Area's 5,900 acres of forest, marshes, and kettle lakes in southeastern Michigan. The campground welcomes both equestrian and nonequestrian campers, with each site equipped with a picket pole for horses, fire ring, and picnic table. Potable water is available from a pump at the campground entrance, and vault toilets serve the facility. Sites 20 and 21 feature concrete pads for accessible camping. The campground provides direct access to 44 miles of diverse trails, including 11 miles dedicated to horseback riding, 16 miles of mountain biking terrain, and 17 miles of hiking paths. The Cedar Creek Trail connects from the campground to the broader trail network. The park encompasses more than 10 inland lakes for fishing and paddling, with Haven Hill Natural Area showcasing diverse ecosystems from swamp forests to hardwood stands. Visitors can explore remnants of the Edsel Ford family estate, enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, or relax at the designated swim beach on Teeple Lake. The equestrian campground and trails are maintained in partnership with the Highland Trail Riders Association. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.
