About

High Rye Cabin offers a rustic backcountry experience in the northern Fleecer Mountains of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps around 1919 in the historic German Gulch mining district, the cabin served as an administrative site until the 1940s when it was opened to the public. It sits in a meadow and forested setting, providing a base for exploring the wildlife-rich highlands and wetlands of the Fleecers. The 2-room cabin accommodates up to four guests on bunk beds and includes a wood stove, flat stovetop for cooking, basic utensils, table with chairs, and an axe. A vault toilet is located outside. Guests must bring their own bedding, lanterns, matches, food, drinking water, and garbage bags. Creek water is available but requires treatment. Firewood is sometimes available but not guaranteed. Recreational opportunities include fishing in nearby German Gulch, Beefstraight, and Norton creeks, along with hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and OHV trails. A horse corral is available for those bringing horses (weed-free certified hay required). The area supports elk, mule deer, moose, black bear, and wolves, making it popular during fall big game hunting season.

Directions

From Butte, travel west on Interstate 90 for about 12 miles to exit 211. Continue about 3 miles south on Highway 441. Turn left onto Forest Service Road 82 and travel 4 miles south to the cabin.
