About

Canyon Creek Cabin was constructed in 1930 as a Forest Service guard station where rangers stayed while working in this remote area of the Pioneer Mountains. The cabin sits at approximately 7,300 feet elevation at the base of a sheer cliff, with the Wise River running nearby and Canyon Creek adjacent to the property. The location places guests in the middle of a historic mining district with numerous exploration opportunities including nearby charcoal kilns dating back to mining days. The area offers diverse recreation year-round. A trail climbs 5 miles to glacial lakes in the Pioneer Mountains, accessible via Forest Road 7401 near the cabin. Old mining roads provide excellent hiking and biking routes. Canyon Creek offers fishing for brook, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. Winter brings opportunities for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, though guests should be prepared for avalanche danger and carry proper backcountry safety equipment. Wildlife viewing is exceptional, with mountain goats inhabiting the cliff and surrounding area, moose in nearby willow bottoms, and deer and elk on their winter range up and down-canyon. Black bears also frequent the area. The cabin has no electricity or water, and guests must bring their own amenities. Access requires a four-wheel drive or high clearance vehicle, and winter conditions between December and April may necessitate snowmobiles, skis, or snowshoes for the final 6 or more miles.

Directions

From Melrose, travel west on Trapper Creek Road for about 5.5 miles, then continue on Canyon Creek Road for approximately 7 miles. Follow signs to the cabin, located about 0.5 miles from the turnoff. Four-wheel drive is recommended. Winter access may require snowmobiles, cross country skis, or snowshoes for 6 or more miles.
