About

Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground occupies a secluded stretch of Flaming Gorge Reservoir shoreline within the Ashley National Forest. The campground takes its name from a hiding spot historically used by Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch gang. Access requires either boating approximately 2 miles from Sheep Creek Bay Boat Ramp or hiking in from the Hideout/Carter Creek Trailhead on Dowd Mountain via Forest Road 094. The 18 tent-only sites are spread among pinyon pine and juniper forest at 6,040 feet elevation. Each site includes a cabana for shade, a picnic table, and a fire ring. Flush restrooms and potable water from a low-flow spring are available during the season, though campers are encouraged to conserve water. Boat slips accommodate vessels up to 36 feet, with one boat per slip. There is no trash service; campers must pack out all garbage. Boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming, and canoeing are the primary activities. Lucerne Valley Marina, a short boat ride away, offers fuel, boat slips, fishing licenses, bait, and basic groceries. Flaming Gorge Dam provides guided tours of the hydroelectric plant, and the Green River below the dam offers rafting through dramatic geology and past historic outlaw sites and Native American rock art.

Directions

From Manila, Utah: Take State Route 44 southeast for 7 miles. Turn northeast onto Forest Road 092 and continue to Sheep Creek Bay Boat Ramp. Once on the water, travel 2 miles southeast to reach the campground. Hikers can access via the Hideout/Carter Creek Trailhead on Dowd Mountain off Forest Road 094.
