About
Herman Creek Campground and Horse Camp is situated in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, just east of Cascade Locks and approximately 47 miles from Portland. The campground features 7 sites, some equipped with horse stalls, making it a popular destination for equestrian camping. The facility serves as an important trailhead for Herman Creek Trail #406 and the Pacific Crest Trail #2000, offering access to numerous loop opportunities and connections to the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness. The forest surrounding the campground was previously found to have laminated root rot, a destructive fungus affecting conifers. The area has been treated and replanted with native hardwoods, and recreation managers are currently redesigning the campground facility. When operational, the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations, charging $10 per night for single sites and $5 for additional vehicles. The campground provides vault toilet facilities but no potable water, so campers must bring their own water supply. RV and trailer access is limited to vehicles 20 feet or less due to the forested setting and road conditions. Check-in is at 2:00 p.m., check-out at 12:00 noon, with quiet hours enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
