About
Eagle Creek Campground holds the distinction of being the first developed campground in the Forest Service system, originally opening in 1916 at the dawn of America's car camping era. Located in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, the campground sits atop a bluff above Interstate 84 and Eagle Creek, surrounded by a classic Douglas fir and maple forest with osprey nesting overhead. The campground features 17 well-spaced campsites that create a feeling of privacy, with most sites offering paved parking aprons and full accessibility. While the setting is beautiful with towering trees, visitors should be aware that the location above Interstate 84 and railroad tracks means highway and train noise is constant, particularly at sites 7-14. The campground is best suited for tent camping and small trailers, with a strict 20-foot trailer limit due to tight switchbacks on the access road. Eagle Creek Campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the Columbia River Gorge's outstanding hiking opportunities. The historic Eagle Creek Trail, built along cliffs overlooking the creek starting in 1916, remains one of the most popular and scenic hikes in the Gorge. Other nearby attractions include Multnomah Falls, Bonneville Dam and fish hatchery, Cascade Locks Museum, and world-class kiteboarding in Hood River. The area offers exceptional wildflower viewing, bird watching, salmon fishing on the Columbia River, and access to the Mount Hood National Forest and Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness for extended backpacking trips.
Directions
